Merle Van Dyke Nickerson, 81, of Harwich Port, MA died peacefully on May 14, 2017 at the Wingate Healthcare facility in Brewster, MA.

Merle was the son of the late Leslie Van Dyke and Annie May Nickerson and brother of the late Elliott D. Nickerson. Merle was born in the family home in Harwich Port in December of 1935 and was the 9th generation of Nickerson's to be born and live in Harwich since 1678. He lived in the family home throughout his lifetime. He worked at the Melrose Inn for many years, working in the kitchen during the summer season and completing outside work during the off season. After leaving the Melrose in 1975, Merle did yard maintenance for a number of neighbors and worked at the Port Cinema in Harwich Port until it closed.

Merle is survived by two nieces and one nephew; Paula Nickerson Plock and her husband Ronald of Stamford, VT; Robert E. Nickerson and his wife Barbara of Harwich Port, MA; and Joanne Nickerson Sears of Yarmouth, MA as well as Jim Nikula who lived with the family for some time and his wife Maxine of Harwich.

Merle was gentle soul with the innocence of youth throughout his entire life. In later years he required support from a number of caregivers that enabled him to reside in his home. Without their care, this would not have been possible. His caregivers adored Merle and recognized his gentleness. He had a strong love of music. In his younger years, he went to the beach every chance he could. He completed his nightly walk from Wychmere to Allen's Harbor almost every day of the year.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2017, at 11:00 am at the family plot on Pine Avenue in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Harwich Port, MA.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Broad Reach Hospice and Palliative Care, 390 Orleans Road, North Chatham, MA 02650, Best Buddies Massachusetts, 45 Bromfield St., Floor 7, Boston, MA 02108, or a charity of choice.
